Is 5GHz Wi-Fi the same as 5G mobile?

5G and 5GHz are both terms used for wireless connectivity or Wi-Fi, both are Radio Frequencies but they are not the same frequency. People often shorten the term 5GHz Wi-Fi to 5G which adds to some confusion especially when researching any health affects* of radio frequencies.

5GHz is a radio signal frequency. GHz stands for Giga Hertz (1,000 megahertz MHz).

5G is the mobile signal standard of radio frequency. The G stands for ‘Generation’. Before 5G there was 4G LTE and 3G.

Low-band 5G uses a similar frequency range as current 4G mobiles, 600 – 700 MHz. Low-band 5G will have a similar range and coverage area to current deployed 4G towers.

Mid-band 5G uses microwaves of 2.5-3.7 GHz. Each mobile tower providing service up to several Kms radius.

High-band 5G currently uses frequencies of 25 – 39 GHz, near the bottom of the millimeter wave band (mmWave).
